Ingredients
1 tablespoon kosher salt, plus more for boiling
1 tablespoon canola oil
1 ½ lb ground beef (650 g)
1 tablespoon freshly ground black pepper
2 cups water (480 mL)
½ medium white onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, grated
3 red Filipino hot dogs, preferably Martin brand, sliced crosswise ½–1-inch thick (1.25–2.55 cm)
½ cup banana ketchup (120 g), preferably Jufran brand, or to taste
16 oz dried spathetti (450 g)
Freshly grated sharp cheddar cheese, Edam cheese, or Queso de Bola
How to Make It
1. Step
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
2. Step
In a medium saucepan or skillet, heat the canola oil over medium heat until shimmering. Add the ground beef, salt, pepper, and water and cook, stirring to break up the meat, until the beef is browned, about 10 minutes.
3. Step
Move the beef to one side of the pan, then add the onion and garlic to the other side and stir until fragrant, about 3 minutes. Mix the onion in with the beef.
4. Step
Add the hot dogs and stir to combine. Cook until warmed through.
5. Step
Stir in the spaghetti sauce and banana ketchup until well-incorporated. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10–15 minutes, until the sauce is warmed through.
6. Step
Add the spaghetti to the boiling water and cook according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain the noodles.
7. Step
Divide the spaghetti between serving dishes, then ladle the spaghetti sauce on top. Sprinkle the cheese on top and let melt.
